The one-day Basics course is aimed at those who are just starting out on their neonatal career.
The two-day Advanced course is aimed at neonatologists, sonographers and radiologists, ideal for those with some ultrasound experience who want to be updated on what can be achieved with cranial ultrasound in terms of diagnosis and prognosis.
The course is lecture based, although new for this year the speakers have prepared some videos to facilitate ttheir teaching. There is an open discussion session where delegates are encouraged to bring their own examples of images they have found interesting or perhaps difficult to interpret. There is also an assessment quiz at the end of each day to solidify learning.
NCU THE BASICIS
- Basic normal and abnormal anatomy
- Use of the ultrasound machine and understanding the function of the controls and probes
- Cranial ultrasound in the term infant admitted with early neurological symptoms – HIE and stroke
- Ultrasound imaging of preterm brain injury
- Term infants with later seizure onset / less acute problems
- Doppler blood velocity measurements
NCU – ADVANCED
- Standard cranial ultrasound examination and how to use supplemental acoustic windows
- Ultrasound imaging of brain maturation: normal findings versus pathological changes
- MRI in neonatal brain imaging
- Preterm: haemorrhage, PHVD and outcome
- The neonatal cerebellum: normal development and injury
- Preterm: white matter injury
- Metabolic disease – tumours/neurocutaneous disorders
- Assessing asphyxial damage in the term infant
- Congenital abnormalities
- Term focal lesions
- Sinus venous thrombosis and associated lesions
- Doppler measurements of CBFV
- Infections
- Protocols for imaging preterm infants of different gestational ages, term infants with HIE, fits, dysmorphisms, floppiness
